the ups and downs of life

Writing life

Writing comes naturally for some. I would rather write words than speak them. Certain things mean more written. They can evoke a feeling that we just can’t say.

I have trouble with dialogue, though, at times. I can describe a scene and a feeling but when it comes to breathing life into those characters with words I sometimes lose momentum.

I’ve been reading this free e-book that is helping me overcome my problem. It’s called Writing Dialogue by Tom Chiarella. This book is thoughtful, engaging, wise, funny, helpful and full of examples and tips.

If you need help making your characters communicate, try this book. I can’t remember where I found it but I’m sure you could Google it and locate it. It’s helping me a lot!

Part of Why I Write

why i write

why i write

It’s part of who I am. I have been writing since I could hold a pencil. I didn’t know the words at first. They were scribbles on paper. Then I went to school and learned and then began forming words. Words gave life to my imagination. I did it in fragments because I didn’t believe I had talent. Now I do it because I do believe I do and because even if I don’t, it fulfills me.

I Got My Early Christmas Present!

christmas present

I usually don’t buy myself presents. I decided this year that I deserved a present, though. I have gone through a lot and I really deserved something. I don’t buy things all throughout the year and I don’t buy a lot of expensive stuff. And I didn’t even buy an expensive Christmas present for myself. I bought something under $40 for myself that I hope to use quite a bit. I bought an e-reader. I know I have complained about how a real book is better. I stand by that. There is nothing like flipping the pages of a book. It is completely better. But I don’t have time to get to the store to buy books all the time. Plus I can download free books! I love free!

I got my e-reader through Wal-Mart on Cyber Monday. It was $20 off and I purchased it through a site that gives me points for purchases through affiliates. Win-win. I made points for buying something I was going to get anyway. I was amazed when it was on my doorstep Wednesday. I didn’t choose expedited shipping but it was there in a flash! It’s nothing fancy. It’s a basic e-reader and does basic stuff but I don’t need fancy. I need something easy and convenient.

One thing I figured about it was that it would help me with my writing. I don’t think I can write as well until I read more. I haven’t had time to really pick up a good book in a while. Now I can. Anyone have any suggestions on something good to read?

Why Do I Blog?

Blogging Heroes

So someone asked me recently why I blog. It’s a good question. It did make me think a lot about the concept. There are many reasons. First, I have a head full of thoughts. Blogging is a way to just take the junk floating in my head and get it out. Sometimes it is random chaos and other times it is somewhat ordered chaos. Either way I still consider it chaos. And it is mine and I love it. And I hate it at times as well. This is me. I have a love/hate relationship with my thoughts.

Second, I feel that blogging helps develop my writing. I did not study writing in college but I do feel like I am not a shabby writer. I feel like I definitely have a lot to learn. As you write you learn how to turn a phrase or sometimes come up with a better cliché. Writing in a blog provides practice for something I love. And I don’t know why tapping out letters makes me happy, but it does. Maybe I like to be humorous at times and it is very difficult to do in written form? And it is so gratifying when you actually pull it off! Even if you don’t actually LOL but you do slightly lift the corner of your mouth. That is gratification.

Third, I like to just tell the crazy antics of my life. Sometimes the stupidest and craziest things happen and I am wondering if the rest of the world has ever had these stupid things happen. Or I just have something on my mind and just need it off my mind. Blogging is much cheaper than therapy, as I have stated before. I like to let people know about this craziness and sometimes also let them see the softer side of me, too. I have a lot of walls built up. Blogging allows me to let the walls down from time to time when I feel safe.

So why do I blog? Many reasons that create some order for me. Anyone else? Why do you blog? I may have questions for you! I love to learn!!!!

Writer’s Help

I don’t have time to write a great blog about this but wanted to put a blog up with some good info while I am thinking about it. If you want a list of 100 writing markets for free, you can get it. I may write more later but I had to write this while I was thinking. Have a good day!
