I Forgot What Color My Hair Is

After so many years of coloring my hair I forgot what my natural hair color really is. I mean, I knew it was brown. I just didn’t realize how dark. I’ve had reddish-brown, coffee-brown, golden-brown, and every other shade in between. So with all those colorings I lost track of my real hair color. So the other day my cousin posted a picture of my father and I when I was like 14. I had dark hair! The picture made it look almost black. It was never quite that dark, but still…

Above is the pic of me and my Daddy back in the day. See? I had dark hair! (BTW, I sure do miss my Daddy!)

This is more of the color I have now. You can see that it is a bit lighter. I mean, it sure isn’t blonde or anything, but it isn’t as dark as that other picture.

It amazes me how I forgot how dark my hair was. I guess you just forget when you keep changing it. Or the color seeps into your roots and affects your brain. Either way, I forgot!

The Art of Reading a Book

Girl reading a book.

Reading a book was a simple pleasure in the past. Now it’s not as simple. The electronic age has taken over. Don’t get me wrong. I love computers and all the wonderful things we can do with our electronics. I have nearly worn my laptop out. But there are some things that I feel should be sacred. Books are one of them.

For me reading a book isn’t just reading a bunch of words that make up a story. No! It’s an experience. It’s a time to breathe and unwind. There’s something special when you have your thumb and forefinger lifting the corner of a page ready to turn it to see what happens next. I love that feeling of anticipation! You just can’t get the same feeling from a Nook or Kindle. You’re not physically turning a page in wistful eagerness. You’re clicking on a screen. That’s kind of a let-down. It’s more of an automated response than a physical reaction to the story. I prefer good, old-fashioned books. They’re literary history that you can hold in your hands!

I guess I should be glad that people are reading anything. In today’s age we don’t read like we use to. I think it’s sad that we’re so busy or don’t care enough to pick up a good book. Maybe we should do that more often. Let our minds wander and create scenes from the printed words instead of waiting for the movie to come out. And I’m as guilty as everyone else. I won’t lie. I do love to read but I have been too busy to read for pleasure for a couple of years. Finishing my degree makes me read what the school dictates and not what I truly want. I’m grateful for blogs so I can get bits and pieces here and there. Thankfully I should be through with my degree in about three months and will be able to read again for myself. I can’t wait!

Don’t You Hate It When

  • you get your order from the fast food place and drive off and realize they didn’t give you a straw for your drink?
  • you find out that it is going to rain after you have left your umbrella at home?
  • you were singing in the car to the top of your lungs and realized that the back window was down and the car full of teenagers next to you are laughing at you?
  • you wore a white shirt and decided to have Mexican food and inevitably dropped salsa on yourself?
  • you were supposed to bring something for the potluck at work?
  • you sent a text message to the wrong person?
  • you were supposed to get a reminder message for an appointment and didn’t and you forget your appointment?
  • you burped out loud while thinking you were alone and realized someone else was in the room?
  • you say you want your hair trimmed and your definition of a trim and the hair stylist’s definition are not the same?
  • you realize that your fat pants are now too tight?
  • you forgot to mail your power bill?
  • the brakes go out as you’re driving downhill?
  • you need to rest for a big day and instead you keep waking up every hour on the hour?
  • you’re almost out of gas and it is cold and dark?
  • you thought someone was talking to you but they were actually on their blue tooth?
  • instead of replying to one person in an email you replied to everyone?
  • you realized that you got played?
  • you didn’t realize the toilet seat was left up and it is dark?
  • your contact lens rolls up and gets stuck far back under your eyelid?
  • your socks don’t fit?
  • the elastic in your underwear snaps?
  • your underwire bra wire breaks and starts stabbing you as a 2 hour meeting at work is just beginning?
  • you forget to buy toothpaste and you have to cut the tube open to scrape out the remnants to have enough to brush your teeth before leaving the house?

To Get It Right

Maybe with the holidays approaching I am more emotional, but I was watching Glee and heard this song and it hit me hard. It was one of those songs where you wondered if someone had been watching your life and had written it about you. It was powerful to say the least.

So if  you haven’t heard the song yet (I strongly advise you to listen), it is about how we sometimes do our best and it just doesn’t work and we wonder how many times it will take to get it right. I have often felt like I was the only one in the world to feel that way but I know that isn’t the truth. It can’t be.

But doesn’t it sometimes seem that we do our best and time after time it isn’t good enough? And no matter what we do, it just doesn’t seem to be. You try this and it doesn’t work so you try that and it doesn’t either. It is frustrating and often heart-breaking. I was glad to hear a song that put those feelings to music. Often I like to hear how I feel put into song. I don’t know why it makes me feel better but it does.

Anyway, I will keep trying even though it seems like I keep running into brick walls. Maybe if I keep hitting that wall it will finally be weakened enough so that it will break down.

No One Likes Pieces Left Behind

I was reading on of my favorite bloggers the other day over at http://thejackieblog.com/ and she wrote about the happy commercialization of menstruation. It was comical because in the same week another blogger had pretty much written about the same thing. I laughed.

But here’s what gets me…why do people who dream up these commercials think that some of this stuff is ok? One thing in particular I am thinking about is the Charmin toilet paper ads. The bears with bits of TP stuck to their furry butts. First, they’re bears. I think if they did wipe it would be with leaves. They live in a forest and don’t have jobs. Shopping for expensive toilet paper would be really hard. Another issue I have with these commercials is the fact that we’re giving these bears humanistic qualities. So doesn’t this mean they should be wearing clothes? Instead, you see basically naked bears walking around with TP stuck to their butts. Maybe the advertisers thought this was cute. I think it is stupid and promotes a nudist lifestyle.

So, any commercials out there that irk you?
