Moods Are Contagious

Moods. They’re like illnesses and are quite contagious. So if you’re in a good mood, please come my way. And if you’re not, take it elsewhere. I can catch a mood easily. I wonder if there is a vaccine for it catching moods. Hmmm…something to ponder.

But have you ever noticed how easily it is to catch someone’s mood? If you are around someone who is griping and complaining, you are more apt to begin to feel quite negative, too. It’s really easy. It’s also amazing at how fast it works. I have watched it happen before and have been amazed. And the funny thing is it is much easier to catch a bad mood than a good. Maybe that is one reason for the old saying, “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

But if you have never considered this, watch others and see what happens. You’ll see that I’m right. Moods are like illnesses. And the more negative the mood, the easier it is to catch. Maybe we are a pessimistic society. I don’t know. It’s just very interesting. I know I am quite susceptible.

  1. I like to experiment at work with people who are grouchy, I try to be really upbeat and joke around…I like to see if I have the power to change someone’s bad mood. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve even been able to turn my own bad mood around…usually by noticing things I’m thankful for and listing them in my mind…you can either bring yourself up or down…if I don’t force myself to focus on the positive, I start wallowing in the negative, and it spirals down from there. I just want to be happy most of the time…sometimes a good cry is called for, but not too often.

    • I admit I am grouchy at times. And there is a time and place for it. But I don’t want to be all the time. And for me if I don’t cry from time to time I will explode. If I am not mildly sarcastic 80% of the time then there will probably be some trouble. But overall I like my mood to be good. I know people, though, who are always in a bad mood and seem to want to put me in a bad one. I refuse to let them.
